I thought "someone" indicates one person and is considered to be singular, but "them" is used at the end of the sentence? why's that?

You are right. Someone indicates one person and is considered to be singular. At the end of the sentence, "them" is used as a gender-neutral pronoun. When we are unsure about the gender of someone, we can use they/them instead of he/him and she/her. Ex: When your friend is struggling, you should be there to help them. = You have to support your friend (male or female) when they are going through a tough time. Ex: If your boss asks you to do something, you have to do what they ask you to. = You have to do what your boss (male or female) asks yo to do.
