Here "wrench" means distressed or sad. When the twins gave the item to Harry, they felt sad, but they did it anyway. Ex: I hated leaving home today. It was a wrench having to say goodbye to my family. Ex: It was a wrench giving my favourite watch to my little cousin. But I knew he would like it.
