What's the main difference between being "envy" and being "jealous?"

Being "jealous" is much more common than saying one "envies" someone, or is "envious." "Envy" has a more serious tone than "jealous." Technically, "envy" is used when you want something you don't have, and "jealousy" is when you have something, but you feel threatened to lose it. Although, generally, "jealousy" is used for both of these things. Ex: I always envied how good you were at sports since I was so bad at it. Ex: She gets a little jealous when other girls talk to her boyfriend. Ex: I envy the lifestyle that celebrities have. = I'm jealous of the lifestyle that celebrities have.
