"Well on its way" means that someone or something has made a substantial amount of progress at doing or aiming for something, that they'll almost certainly succeed at it. Ex: The basketball team is well on its way to the big leagues with the number of wins we've had this season. We just need to win a few more. Ex: We've saved enough money to be well on our way to Paris soon!
