A "place" is used more generally than "spot", and refers to a location without much precision. Whereas, "spot" is more specific and refers to an exact location. A "spot" can also be located within a "place". Ex: There's a nice corner spot in the restaurant. I recommend sitting there. Ex: What a nice spot to read a book in on a sunny day. Ex: We arrived at the house. The place, overall, was rundown and missed a few regulation points. Ex: What a lovely place you have. I should visit you more.
