I know "I am the best" is a common expression. But does it imply overconfidence that may lead to a negative impression?

Right! Saying "[something/someone] is the best" is a common expression! Saying "I'm the best," calling yourself the best, can be seen as arrogant and overconfident, which can be seen as negative. I guess it depends on who says it, in what context, and the people you say it around. Sometimes it's said more in a joking manner, which makes it funny and not arrogant. Ex: I'm the best skater here. There is no competition because I'm that good. Ex: He kept calling himself the best baker in this city, and then he had to close down. Ex: I know, I'm amazing. You're welcome. => joke
