Is it common to call others "honey"? If so, is there alternative words that can replace it?

Not really. Some people do, but most will only call their loved ones "honey." Calling someone honey is a term of endearment. Many couples will call each other "honey" regardless of gender. Alternative words are "sweetie," "darling," and "love."
