Why would he say "half a million" instead of "five hundred thousand?"

In conversation, and not having to mention the exact number, then saying "half a million" or "half a billion" is very common! It's just not used with "thousands" and below that. I'd say this is because a "million" is considered a whole of a measurement, whereas saying "five hundred thousand" is slightly more difficult. So people just say "half a million" instead. It's used for other whole measurements as well, like "half a kilogram" or "half a cup." Again, "half a cup" would be easier to say than "two hundred and fifty milliliters." Ex: You only need half a cup of water and a cup of pancake mix to make pancakes. Ex: There are half a million people with the condition, but they might know it.
