The word "rather" in this context is used to mean to some degree or to a certain degree. It is similar to saying "somewhat", "fairly", "quite", "relatively", or "pretty". Out of all of these synonyms, "rather" sounds the most formal. Ex: I feel rather tired today. Ex: Our conversation was rather strange.
