A mask is something that covers part of your face or your whole face. So, a "face mask" is a type of "mask" since it covers your nose and mouth. "Masks" are often used to dress up for fun or to make sure people don't recognise you. A "face mask" has a different purpose, as it is worn to protect you against dust, germs, and air pollutants. Ex: I forgot my mask for the party. I won't look like Spider-Man without my Spider-Man mask. Ex: Remember to wear your face mask when you go outside!
