To "manage" means to control or be in charge of something. In this case, it means that Marriott helps to take care of, but not own, hotels. Ex: I manage a fast food restaurant. Ex: I help my parents manage their business. Meanwhile, to "franchise" means to grant a franchise (authority) to another person or company to carry out business, oftentimes using their name, brand, or products/services. In essence, it means giving them a license to operate. Ex: Our business is doing well, so I am planning on selling franchises to others. Ex: We're going to franchise out the business. I don't want to own all the assets anymore.
