I don't understand why "a" is needed before "headache". It doesn't look like a countable noun.

Actually, "headache" is a countable noun! One can have many headaches over a period, or they could currently have a singular one. You can't have more than one at a time, though. Ex: I used to get so many headaches in university. Ex: I'm getting a headache.
