Is "passing" a more formal word to express death?

Kind of! It's formal and polite to say "passing" rather than "death" or "dead" as those sounds a little too harsh and straightforward. "Passing" is a euphemism- it's a substitute for the harsh word "death." Ex: She passed away last night. = She died last night. Ex: The passing of my grandmother was expected.
