Would it be same in meaning to say "can't" or "shouldn't" instead of "don't" here?

It would be a little different! "Can't" or "shouldn't" imply something one is not allowed to do because of external factors or expectations, even if it might be something one wants to do. Otherwise, one could get in trouble. Whereas, here, "don't" means something that's assumed to not be done. They haven't been told to not talk about Bruno. It's something they've all assumed to not do. It's normal for them. Ex: We don't keep our pots on the shelf. We keep them in the cupboard. Ex: She doesn't sleep until she's read a chapter of her book. Ex: He can't go play outside until he has finished his homework.
