"As hell" is a common informal and somewhat impolite phrase/expression. It is usually used to make a statement more forceful. It can also be added to any adjective to add emphasis, regardless of whether or not it makes sense to reference hell as an entity. Ex: They were mad as hell. Ex: We've been working as hard as hell to finish on schedule. Ex: This room is hot as hell. Ex: A: Will you meet the deadline? B: I'll sure as hell try.
