He's using the present tense to retell a story- something that happened to him. He uses the present tense here so that the listener can imagine it as if it were really happening. It makes the story more dramatic and puts the listener into the experience. This is also called the "historical present" or "narrative present." A lot of books use this as well. Ex: I'm standing in line, and a lady comes up to me and asks, "can you keep my place?" => present tense = I was standing in line, and a lady came up to me and asked, "can you keep my place?" => past tense Ex: It's Sunday, and it's raining. But I have to go to the shops. So, I put on my shoes.
