A "gilded cage" is a pretty and expensive cage, but it is restrictive. So even though it may seem nice to look at or nice to be in, it is still limiting. It comes from the expression "a bird in a gilded cage". Ex: Because of the media, the celebrity stayed in their house, as if living in a gilded cage. Ex: My bedroom felt like a gilded cage when I was studying. Ex: Belle was trapped like a bird in a gilded cage.
