The difference between the two is the intensity of the emotion (surprise). For example, you can think of someone who is shocked as being extremely surprised. It's the difference between winning a $5 bet or the actual lottery, for example. Ex: I was surprised to find that I had forgotten to turn the lights off when I left the house. Ex: I was shocked to discover that despite my low SAT score, I got into Harvard.
