What's the main difference between "gloves" and "gauntlets?"

A "gauntlet" is a kind of glove covered in steel and generally used as armor. A "glove" is much more common and generally made out of soft materials like wool, cotton, polyester, and so on. Ex: I need to buy some gloves for winter. Ex: The knight in my game has gauntlets.
