"Building character" means to go through challenges or activities that create morals or values in a person. "Adding character" means an individual or unique trait that someone or something might have. Ex: The wooden chairs and rustic paintings really add character to the interior of the house. Ex: This camp will be good for Johnny. It will help build his character.
