The University of Mississippi is called "Ole Miss" as a term of endearment! If one refers to something or someone by saying "ole", it is familiar and comforting. It also indicates that it has been present for a while, "ole" meaning "old". "Miss" in "Ole Miss" is short for "Mississippi", which is the name of a big river. Ex: My dad used to own the ole truck in the garage, then he gave it to me. Ex: I think it's time to let go of the ole waffle maker in the kitchen. It doesn't work anymore, unfortunately. Ex: Hey Spot! Hey ole girl! Have you been a good dog?
