To be in/held/ a tight grip means to be held tightly in a hand/hands, to be strongly controlled. It can be meant in a metaphorical or literal way. Ex: I held the book in a tight grip. Ex: The parents had their kids in such a tight grip, they were never allowed to do anything fun.
