What does "for one thing" mean? Is it similar to "for example"?

Kind of, but not quite! "For one thing" introduces a possible reason from a few possible reasons. It's similar to saying, "One reason is...". Whereas "for example" introduces a likely or typical case for something. Ex: I like working at home! One reason is that I can be at home with my dog. = I like working at home! For one thing, I can be at home with my dog. Ex: I like being at home with my dog. For instance, I took my dog for a walk during lunch yesterday. => for instance = for example Ex: I prefer soccer games over baseball matches. For one thing, I understand the rules better in soccer.
