You're right! It is a phrasal verb. For people to "have something in common", they must have a similar or identical trait(s), experience(s) or interest(s). If two people both enjoy watching sports, then they "have something in common". Ex: My wife and I don't have a lot in common, but we have the same life goals, and that's more important. Ex: My sisters like the same clothes and music, they have so much in common!
