What's the origin of "donuts"?

Baked goods similar to donuts existed in Europe for hundreds of years. However, Dutch settlers brought "olykoeks" (oily cakes) to New York in the 19th century. Over time, they eventually became the baked cakes called donuts/doughnuts that we know today. It can be considered to be an American invention with heavy Dutch influence!
