Great question. As nouns the difference between "life" and "livelihood" is that life refers to the state of existence that follows birth, and forms before death. It literally refers to being alive and living. However the term livelihood has a few meanings but is most commonly used to refer to the way in which someone is able to survive, usually it is the way they make money or it is something that brings them happiness. Because of this difference in meaning you cannot replace livelihood with life. Ex: This job is my livelihood. I can't afford to lose it. Ex: He spent his whole life trying to understand her.
