In English, if you say "aunt", does it refer to their father's family? Or mother's family?

"Aunt" refers to both sides of the family- mother and father. It's the same with "uncle". You would have to specify which family if you wanted to add that for context. We also use the term "side" when talking about either your father or mother's family. Ex: My aunt on my mother's side is really nice! Ex: Hi, Charlie! Meet my aunt Lindsay. => could be the father or mother's family Ex: I have an uncle on my father's side who owns a farm.
