"Break free" means to escape from the hold or control of something or someone. It can also mean escaping from imprisonment. Ex: I'll wait till I can break free from this boring party, then I'll come to see you. Ex: I wish I could break free of this guilt. Ex: Did you hear? Two prisoners broke free last night.
