I've once heard there is a slight difference between "as if" and "as though". Can you explain it a bit more?

Yes, sure! Often times they are interchangeable, and are widely considered interchangeable. But, in terms of tone, "as if" suggests something more hypothetical or dramatic than "as though." "As though" is more of a plausible statement. Ex: It looked as if it was going to rain, but it wasn't. Ex: It looked as though it was going to rain, so Jen grabbed her umbrella. Ex: He talked to her as if she had never met her. Ex: He talked to her as though she had never met her.
