Kiwi asks…

How are "admit" and "acknowledge" different? Can I use them interchangeably?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

"Admit" and "acknowledge" have very different meanings and can't really be used interchangeably. To "acknowledge" something means to recognize something or to accept it. To "admit" on the other hand usually means to confess or reveal something often with reluctance or hesitation. Ex: She ignored us and did not acknowledge our instruction. Ex: I'm pretty sure he stole the car, but he won't admit it.
