You're right! They do sound similar. To "suppress something" means to prevent, subdue, or restrain something. Whereas "pressing something" could be physically pushing a button, or it could mean an important issue that one needs to address. Ex: I will suppress the desire to get up and go to the fridge for some cake. Ex: Stop pressing the wrong button on the remote! Ex: Sir, there is a pressing issue that needs your attention right away.
