Kiwi asks…

When can I use "would rather?"

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

"Would rather" can be used when presented with the option of something, and you want to say that you'd choose something over something else. It's similar to saying you "prefer" something. Some people even ask "would you rather" questions as a game! Ex: I'm a homebody. I'd rather stay inside than go out at night. Ex: I'm a homebody. I prefer to stay inside than go out at night. Ex: A: Would you rather drive 15 hours to get somewhere or walk for three? B: I'd rather walk for three hours! 15 hours is too long.
