Kiwi asks…

What does “from scratch” mean?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

"Made from scratch" is an expression used in cooking and baking. It means that the food was made entirely without the help of something that was already prepared. This is also called homemade. For example, in the United States, apple pie is a very famous dessert. If an apple pie was made from scratch, it would mean that the pie crust and filling was made by the baker and not purchased in a store. Making something from scratch usually takes more time and usually tastes better than store-bought. Here are a few more examples: Ex: She made all of that food from scratch? Wow, that must have taken a long time. Ex: I made my own broth from scratch for my homemade chicken noodle soup. Ex: I will only eat jam made from scratch.
