To "trip" means to stumble or fall because your foot is caught on something (like an object or crack in the sidewalk). In this case, thieves used wire to get people to stumble or fall while walking. Ex: I'm super clumsy, I always trip over my own feet. Ex: I tripped over my cat in the dark.
