What's "be known to" mean? Is it different from "be known for?"

There's a small difference! To "be known to" is used when talking about an action or habit. "To be known for" is talking about a characteristic or quality of a person. But also, they could be interchangeable or have similar usages; it just depends on the form of the sentence. Ex: The owner is known to give big servings of food at the restaurant. Ex: The owner is known for being very kind. = The owner is known to be very kind. Ex: The author is known for her poetic writing style. Ex: The author is known to write poetically
