I do know that the word "weed" both refer to "grass" and "marijuana." Since there's a big gap between these definitions, I'm curious whether natives get confused when they hear the word "weed."

It's easy to determine what definition is intended when you consider context clues! California has legalized marijuana across the state, and it also has a strong image as being a state with many weed consumers (called "potheads"). Thus, if people were to hear "weed" and "California" in the same sentence, they would likely automatically assume the speaker is talking about marijuana. Additionally, marijuana "weed" is a common reference in songs today, but everyday plant "weed" is not.
