Here, "serious" means worrying or critical. That something can possibly be dangerous or risky! So here, he's saying that a jellyfish sting can be quite dangerous and worrying, perhaps if not treated well or immediately. Ex: Rachel didn't get serious injuries while skateboarding. She just got a few minor scratches. Ex: A break-in sounds quite serious.
