Kiwi asks…

What is “fire brigade”? Can I use “brigade” in another way?

Answer from a Native speaker

Rebecca

A "fire brigade" is a group of people trained to fight fires. This is also commonly called a "fire department". The word "brigade" can be used to refer to an organized group of people who are specially trained to do something, but it is most commonly used in the military when referring to a group of military troops or soldiers. Here's an example of this: Ex: He commanded a brigade of 1,000 soldiers. Brigade is a very formal word, so it is rarely used in daily language. Some other words that are frequently used instead of "brigade" are "army", "team", "band", and "squad".
