"Got something down" is a variation of the term to "have something down". Generally, "having something down" us used to mean being able to do something. There is the implication that you merely are able to do that thing to a reasonable degree, not flawlessly. As is the case here since they are talking about basic concepts. Meaning that he doesn't yet have full understanding/ability. Ex: I think I've got this part of the routine down. Ex: I've got my grandma's cookie recipe down.
