Why was the Commonwealth organized? What's the purpose of the organization? What's the historical background?

The Commonwealth was formed in 1949 to maintain a relationship between countries that were part of the British colonies, but are considered "free and equal." Two ex-French colonies have also joined the Commonwealth, and some countries have left. For those part of the Commonwealth, it's a forum to deliberate, problem-solve, and make decisions.
