Kiwi asks…

What's "take a heat" mean? Like to tolerate the hot temperature?

Answer from a Native speaker

teacher

Rebecca

"Take a little heat" is a slight variation of the phrase "Take the heat!" It doesn't literally mean heat as in temperature. It refers to withstanding or enduring criticism, scorn, or disapproval. "Heat" means the pain or unpleasant experience of those things. Ex: I took a little heat from the coach when I showed up to practice late. Ex: She takes the heat from other people well. That's one reason why she's great to work with.
