What does "settle for" mean?
"Settle for" means to accept or to agree to something, even though it may not be your first choice. For example, let's imagine that you are going shopping for eggs. You wanted to buy a certain brand of eggs but the store is out of that brand of eggs. You can either not buy eggs or you can settle for a different brand of eggs even though they aren't the eggs that you want. "Settle for" can be used when discussing items, people, arguments, etc. Ex: She settled for a smoothie when they didn't have her favorite ice cream. Ex: I don't want to settle for someone. I want to be madly in love with the person I am with. Ex: He had to settle for store credit instead of getting his money back.
