"Get rid of" means to remove something, which could mean throwing it away, giving it to somebody, putting it somewhere else, eliminating it, etc. You can also "get rid" of a person, meaning you remove them from your life by not interacting with them anymore. Some synonyms for "get rid of" are "eliminate" "throw out" "do away with" and "dispose of".
