Why is "apologies" plural? Can't I say "apology"?
Excellent question. "Apology" and "apologies' are both correct terms, but their uses are different. "Apology" is used to refer to a previous apology you made. You use apology in the plural form, "apologies", to express regret for being unable to do something, like saying "I'm sorry". This is the context where you use the phrase “my apologies.” In this case, since she is saying she is not sorry, or does not regret anything, therefore "apologies" is the correct term to use. Ex: Please accept my apologies for being late. Ex: My apologies. I can't seem to find the book you lent me. Ex: He didn't accept my apology last time. Ex: I think she owes you an apology.
