student asking question

Could you explain the question "What's one cause that is dear to your heart?" more? I don't understand this question quite well.

The word "cause" here is being used as a noun meaning a principle, aim, or movement that a person is prepared to defend or advocate for. In general it is used to refer to a charitable movement. So the question is asking what principle she is committed to. Ex: She has dedicated her life to the cause of deaf people. Ex: I think breast cancer awareness is a worthy cause.
