What does "cop-out" mean?

"Cop-out" means to avoid doing something that should be done. This may be because you are afraid or shy to do it or you just don't feel like doing it. Ex: I copped out of my dentist appointment. I really don't like going to the dentist. Ex: He copped out of the race.
