Is it okay to use "a whole lot different" instead of "so different"? What are the similar expressions for the "so different"?

Yes, you could swap "so different" for a "whole lot different" as both phrases means very different. As such, "so different" could also be replaced by "very different", really different", "totally different" as these also share the same meaning of very.
