A shawl is a piece of fabric worn over the shoulders or one's head. It is usually draped over the shoulders and has no strings to tie it. A cape is a cloak without sleeves and has strings to secure it around the neck. Ex: I threw my shawl on last minute as we left the house. Ex: Jonathan ran around all day with his cloak on and only took it off at bedtime.
