Great question. "Contact" and "touch" both mean coming into direct connection or close association with someone or something. The difference is that the word "contact" does not let you know if the connection was accidental or not. You don't have to choose to have "contact" with someone. You might fall or do it by accident. "Contact" can also be used to mean call. letter, email. The connection does not have to be physical. "Touch", however, implies the action involved your hands, as well as the decision to make the connection. As such they cannot be used interchangeably as they would lose the nuance as well as, in some cases, be grammatically incorrect. Ex: I touched the flowers. => I used my hands and felt them Ex: I contacted the flowers. => because of the nuance, it sounds as though I tried to call the flowers
