Excellent question. The word "canine" actually refers to a type of mammal which includes but is not limited to dogs. Other canines include, wolves and foxes. So the term, which it can be used to describe or refer to a dog, is not exclusively used for dogs alone. Ex: The number of canines in this forest has grown because it is a wolf mating season. Ex: I'm afraid of all canines. Not just dogs.
